Michipicoten to Montreal RiverRoute Description: The coastline stretching from Michipicoten to Agawa Bay is a diverse mixture of rocky headlands, cliffs, sand beaches and cobbled coves. Highlights of the trip include the 200-metre-high (650 foot) cliffs of Old Woman Bay, the mystical islands of Gargantua, and the Ojibwa pictographs at Agawa Rock.
This trip is well suited to intermediate sea kayakers with solid paddling and rescue skills. This section of coastline is exposed to northwest, west and southwest winds. Large seas can result when the wind blows from these directions. Be particularly cautious paddling from Old Woman Bay to Red Rock River, around Cape Gargantua and from Gargantua Bay to Rhyolite Cove. Carry a VHF marine radio and pick your times carefully. Other hazards include surf and confused seas at the mouth of the Michipicoten River.
Guided trips, rentals and outfitting, shuttles and maps are available from Naturally Superior Advenutres.
